Multiplication Facts Worksheets and Times Tables

Multiplication facts are the last piece of elementary arithmetic that has to become automatic. A student who still counts on their fingers for 7 × 8 will not struggle with multiplication — they will struggle with long division, with equivalent fractions and with everything that comes after, because all of it assumes the facts are free. These five worksheets take the fact families in the order that makes them easiest to learn, and each one ends with a full answer key.

The order matters more than the practice. We start with the 2s, 5s and 10s, which are built on counting patterns children already have. Then the 3s, 4s and 6s, which come from doubling. Then the 7s, 8s and 9s, which are where the real work is. Only then do the facts appear out of order, which is how they will show up on a quiz and in every problem afterwards.

How we use these in class

One family at a time, and not for long. Ten minutes on the fours beats an hour on everything. Fact fluency is built by frequency, not by duration, and a sheet a day for two weeks does more than four sheets on a Friday.

Teach the strategy, then drill it. Nine times a number is ten times the number minus one group: 9 × 7 is 70 − 7. Eight times a number is three doublings. Six times a number is double the threes. A student who knows two of these strategies can rebuild any fact they have forgotten in about a second, which is the difference between a gap and a disaster.

Use the answer key with the student, not after them. Hand over the last page and let them check their own row. Finding your own mistake while the thinking is still warm teaches more than a red mark two days later.

Watch for the two hardest facts. Across every study of this, 7 × 8 and 6 × 7 are the ones that go missing. They are worth teaching on their own, out of any table.

Which sheet for which student

A third grader starting multiplication should begin with the 2s, 5s and 10s even if they seem easy — the point is the pattern, not the difficulty. A fourth grader who is shaky should skip straight to the 7s, 8s and 9s, because that is almost always where the gap is. The mixed sheet is a diagnostic as much as a practice: whichever row they slow down on tells you what to work on tomorrow.

Frequently asked questions

What grade are multiplication facts worksheets for?

Facts are introduced in Grade 3 and are expected to be fluent by the end of Grade 4. These sheets are labeled accordingly, but plenty of fifth and sixth graders need the 7s, 8s and 9s sheet, and there is nothing wrong with giving it to them.

Do these include times tables charts?

No, and on purpose. A chart is a reference; these are practice. A student who has a chart in front of them is reading, not recalling, and recall is the thing we are trying to build.

Are the answer keys included?

Yes, as the last page of every PDF. Print the whole file for yourself and just the middle pages for students.

Can I use these for timed drills?

You can, but we would not. Timing raises anxiety in exactly the students who are already behind, and the evidence that it builds fluency faster than untimed daily practice is thin. If you do time them, time the whole class against the clock, never against each other.
